James Grosjean
James Grosjean began counting cards at the age of 21 after graduating from Harvard with a degree in Applied Mathematics with a specialization in Economics. He continued learning about the game while studying economics in the graduate program at the University of Chicago.
In June 2000, Beyond Counting was published and was well received by the professional playing community. The following year, James became involved in a lengthy litigation against Caesars Palace, the Imperial Palace, and the Griffin Detective Agency, winning jury verdicts against them all, and forcing Griffin into bankruptcy. He competed in the first World Series of Blackjack, and among professional critics is regarded as one of the strongest players ever to assault a blackjack table. In 2006, he became the youngest member elected into the Blackjack Hall of Fame. Most recently, he presented four papers at the 13th International Conference on Gambling and Risk-Taking, sponsored by the University of Nevada (Reno).
Previn Mankodi
Previn is the business end of the Beyond Counting team. Previously he worked at an investment bank and a hedge fund. After business school, he passed on lucrative opportunities in investment management to focus on his passion - finding and exploiting profitable gambling opportunities.
While doing research with Steven Levitt (author of Freakonomics) at the University of Chicago, an encounter with James at a foosball table sparked an interest in advantage play and a partnership/friendship that still continues. Previn has coauthored several gambling-related articles covering topics such as tournament play, Kelly betting, and general advantage techniques. He has also made television appearances on the first World Series of Blackjack and the Ultimate Blackjack Tour. Previn holds a BA from the University of Chicago, a Masters in Economics from Cambridge, and an MBA from Stanford University.
